Day 20 – Chester, MT to Whitlash, MT

This route of 37.8 miles was supposed to be 53% paved, 47% unpaved. But it turned out that all but 6 miles was gravel and we faced a strong northwest wind all day. Some of us thought, despite the relatively low mileage, it was the most challenging day of the trip thus far.
The Sweet Grass Hills came closer every mile as we skirted the hills toward Whitlash. At the last census, Whitlash had a population of 4. Lots of hills on this route, so we were going into the wind, up hill and on gravel – made for a long, slow ride.
The camping in Whitlash was great. We had a cabin so 2 of us slept on the beds inside, while the other two (Rolf & John) slept in their tents. The scenery with the nearby Sweet Grass Hills and a beautiful small pond was outstanding. The private campground was about to fill up with hunters because of the soon-to-open upland bird hunting season. Again, no showers available, and the bathroom facilities were an outhouse, but the ambience was superb.
