Day 21 – Whitlash, MT to Milk River, AB Canada

John, Rolf, & Greg rode this 60.5 mile, mostly gravel route, while Mark drove the truck. The group made a minor change to the route that eliminated some of the gravel.
The day began with a glorious sunrise.
About 6 miles north of Whitlash we passed through US immigration and then Canada customs and immigration. Greg had his pepper spray taken from him because that’s an illegal weapon in Canada, while those of us with bear spray were allowed to keep them. It’s the same stuff, but that apparently doesn’t matter. This border crossing is one of the least used along the entire US/Canada border, with an average of 3 vehicles per day. When they saw us pull up they thought it was a busy day.
The route continued past ranches with cattle and some horses. There were also some large grain (mainly wheat) fields, some in the process of being harvested.
Mark was able to take the truck past the Writing On Stone Provincial Park. He drove in and toured the excellent interpretive center but didn’t have time to actually walk down and see the ancient stone carvings. This site is an important one for the Blackfeet tribe with great cultural and historical significance. Click on the link above for more information.
The route ended at a nice town park in Milk River, AB where we had use of their picnic shelter and restrooms (but no showers).
Rolf developed a leaky tire (he is using tubeless tires) and the sealant was not working adequately. He got to use his knurled reamer and patched his tire under the watchful gaze of John & Mark. And it worked!
