Day 32 – Omak, WA to Winthrop, WA

Today’s route was planned to be 53.6 miles long (all paved) and end at a National Forest campsite.
But the intrepid bikers looked at the weather forecast and saw that heavy rains were predicted for the entire area beginning in the wee hours of 9/13, so we opted for a hotel in Winthrop, WA. This shortened the route to about 47 miles. BUT . . . the route did include a pass in about the middle of the day.
About 10 miles out of Omak the route began to climb, from less than 1000 ft above sea level to the over 4000 ft pass.
John, Greg, & Mark cycled and Rolf handled the truck. John was first over the pass, Greg & Mark took about 4.5 hours to reach the pass. The ride down was 8 miles at a 6% grade, another wild downhill ride!
The Cascades are coming into view.
Once the riders hit the valley it as another 17 miles or so along the Methow River to Winthrop.
Greg & Mark stopped at a roadside bread market where Theresa made us fry bread (from an old Chippewa recipe) and served us cinnamon rolls, a welcome treat at that point.
Rolf secured us rooms at the Abby Creek Inn and we had a restful night.
